If you've had a look at our front page at Get Somebody Now then you will have seen the item on Romania's arrival in force on the worldwide IT scene. I can confirm the prominence of Romanian bidders on Elance and similar sites, and its certainly been an eyebrow raiser. For those of us old enough to remember the events of 1989 as they unfolded on our TV screens, and their historic significance to which we were witness and of which many of us were aware of at the time, the brave insurrection of the people of Timisoara during those days will forever be imprinted on our memories. And now, 17 years on, we see the name Timisoara in a very different context. No doubt some of the insurrectionists would have had this kind of outcome in mind even then, if only in their wildest dreams, but few could have picked the city's rise to prominence as a real player in the global IT industry less than two decades later.
If you have no idea what I am talking about, here is a site from Timisoara itself that will allow you some appreciation of the significance behind this name and what it stands for. Try this link to CyberTim. And if you would like a short summary of its contents, they are summed up in these words - 'Tot Banatu'i fruncea'

Our traffic stats have been going through the roof over the last week or two. Still modest, we would hate to exaggerate, but the progress is encouraging. Its nice to know someone is looking at this site out there in the emptiness of cyberspace. More than that its highly encouraging when we find that more people paid us a visit last Saturday than did the entire total of visitors for July. Credit is mostly due to Margaret, for her innovative and at the same time methodical approach to the problem of traffic building. Lots more ideas are in the pipeline, so lets hope the stats continue their climb.

Extensive research over the last week or so into the keywords issue has given us what we wanted, which was an idea of what it is that IT contractors look for on the net. What we were able to find out will help shape the kind of content we put up on Get Somebody Now over the next few weeks and months, so you will get an idea of that by following our output. If it so happens you don't agree, you think we've got it wrong, then by now you should know what to do - contact us and give us your thoughts ! Look forward to hearing from you.

We're still wrestling with the keyword issue. Its pivotal to the whole enterprise. The point about keywords for us is not simply SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) - we need to know exactly what it is that IT contractors and consultants look for on the net, so we can decide what content to put on Get Somebody Now and what to leave off. GSN is all about content, this is the main service we are offering at this point in time.
We have some ideas, as you can see by the kind of items we are putting on our front page, but the challenge is to constantly build on our understanding of what it is IT professionals want from a website like ours. Any suggestions - let us know. Otherwise, just watch this space !

Regular visitors to Get Somebody Now will have noticed the new look to the site. Not a dramatic change, but steady improvement, we think. It reflects the overall progress we are making on all fronts. Traffic is still modest, but it is breaking all previous records, and the site is taking on an identity and shape of its own. What we really need is more feedback from you, our growing number of visitors. What would you like to see on this site ? What can you not find on the net that should be there and which we could provide ? Don't be shy, drop us a line, we'd love to hear from you.

The last week has seen lots of linking activity on GSN. If you've been over to the Useful Links section, you will have noticed not only more outbound links, but lots of image links added to make the pages more visually interesting and usable at the same time. More links are on their way, the aim is to build these pages into a handy resource for ITers, a one stop shop for all your web-based needs. Lots of inbound link activity has been going on too. Hopefully we'll be seeing the results of that soon with mroe traffic and registrations. The quicker we can establish the site's popularity then the quicker the online database will come through and the quicker we can get all of you your next clients ! Keep your ideas and suggestions coming in, don't be shy, its always good to hear from you.

Get Somebody Now uses Joomla as its Content Management System. As the content is starting to build on our site, the CMS is beginning to come into its own. Joomla is Open Source, and comes highly recommended, but I wondered what other web developers had to say about it, and more generally about the usefulness of a CMS. CMS' are handy for people without either the skill or interest in web development, but this convenience comes at a price. If you want to gain control over your site, to tweak and adjust either its layout or functionality, then it can often be the case that you have to fight your CMS all along the way. Joomla is growing on me, as I get more used to it and add more functionality with new components, so I can see why it is so popular. But still, I can see a time when GSN will leave it behind and go for something else. But what ? I don't know. Any thoughts ?

Get Somebody Now will be producing the first issue of its new
e-Zine very soon. The newsletter will be sent to everyone who registers
with us (unless you don't want to receive it) and will be a regular
feature of the site. The e-Zine will keep you up to date with GSN's
progress in developing its searchable database, and with our marketing
initiatives.
Remember that the more we promote this site the more we are
promoting YOU, but only if you are registered ! We will also be putting
exclusive content into the newsletter that won't be available on the
website. If you have any suggestions as to what we should put in the
e-Zine, or even would like to contribute yourself, then just contact us
through our feedback page. And don't forget to register !

Readers may be interested to know that the initial web design for Get Somebody Now was done by Ray Blaber of Red Planet Productions . I can't say we've stayed faithfully with all aspects of Ray's design, but that is simply due to the fact that like most webmasters I like to play around with a site and in this case I just couldn't help myself. If you would like to have a look at Ray's other work, follow the link here to his own site. As for me. I would like to thank Ray for his patience and assistance as we tried to sort out bugs and get the site working as we wanted. I am happy to recommend Ray to anyone else who needs some assistance with web development, in particular if you are going to use Joomla.

If you are an IT contractor, you can help us. We are
trying to work out just what it is IT contractors search for most on
the net. Looking over this site, you can see how we are trying to put
content on that is of value and relevance to IT professionals. One of
the areas we are less sure of is just what keywords we should focus on
in our search engine submissions. The site is obviously for IT
contractors and consultants, but that doesn't mean IT professionals go
searching using 'IT contractors' as key words. Or do you ?
Please
let us know on this, as we are cranking up our Search Engine
Optimisation efforts, which in turn will help us to market you and gain
you your next client or project. Simply post a comment here on go to
our feedback page. We look forward to hearing from you.

Regular visitors to Get Somebody Now will
have noticed that we have simplified the registration process. We have
done this to make it clearer that the site as it presently stands is
not yet the online database we are developing. We felt it was important
to clarify the point that registration with the site does not imply
registration on the database, which does not as yet exist.
Those who register will gain access to our premium content, which is building up quite rapidly now. they will also receive our new e-Zine,
which will give them further valuable content as well as regular
updates on how the database is coming along. We will also advise of the
marketing initiatives we are taking on your behalf. For more info on
all this, comment here, or else register with GSN and get the e-Zine as it comes out.

John Brady
makes the case here for designing performance management into software
from the start, using an argument that appeals to me as a former
firefighter with the CFA.
John writes, ‘Performance is not
something you can just bolt on to an existing system. Just like you
cannot bolt on fire safety to an inadequately designed building after
it has been built’. The key is to build in the information systems and
diagnostic tools that allow you to monitor performance before things go
wrong, and to track the cause once they do. Without these tools all you
are left with is trial and error.
In the field of fire safety this is known as passive firefighting,
that is, the building does it by itself, simply standing there as it
does what it was built to do.

Vincent McBurney
gives an insightful IT perspective on the shortcomings of the
refereeing at last week’s Australia Croatia game in the world cup.
Vincent
writes, ‘Normally World Cup referees are embroiled in controversies
over judgement decisions such as penalties and free kickjs, but in the
Australia v Croatia match it was a data quality error!’
Vincent
develops his argument by focusing on three elements. The data capture
system is manual and therefore prone to entry error, there is no
automatic validation system to compensate for this, and there is no
mechanism for quality assurance. The result - 'Josip Suminic became the
first player of the World Cup to get three yellow cards in a game'.

Uplifting article on the role of IT consultants from behind the scenes
at Wimbledon, where the tournament’s website is updated 260,000 times a
day while the world’s top tennis players are battling it out on the
grass courts outside.
by James Bennett, editor of Management Consultancy
Every
so often, the consulting industry receives a volley of criticism,
claiming that ‘the only purpose of a management consultant is to make a
small fortune out of telling other people how to run their businesses’.

As announced on the front page, registrations have started to come in to Get Somebody Now,
which is great news for us. The site is in its early stages of
development, and that means traffic volume is still very low, so the
fact that we are already attracting IT contractors and consultants to
register is very encouraging.
The registration forms at this
stage are not our final database, which is also still under
development, so those registering are really just expressing their
interest in the GSN concept. The same applies for clients. The fully
functional searchable database will be coming online in the near
future, and while it is being developed we are concentrating on
generating some traffic to the GSN site so that the IT world knows we
are out there.
If you have any suggestions about how we can
improve or speed up this process, then please send them in. And
register now to join our online community

Get Somebody Now is not my brainchild, but my friend Nick’s. Nick is an experienced IT consultant with his own business who has often needed to find an IT contractor fast for new clients and projects. GSN has two aspects that set it apart. One is that it is directed at independent contractors, and so is not a job site in the normal sense. The other is its searchable database, which allows clients to cut out the middleman of a recruitment agency and access IT contractors and consultants direct. A third aspect is the website itself, which we see as a valuable resource for the entire information technology industry, both on the IT contractor side and for their clients. We hope to develop this site in a number of imaginative and innovative ways, as a focal point for the IT contracting and consulting industry. More on this later. But we need you to participate, first by registering, and then through your interaction with the site, including this blog. So please, your thoughts and comments, ideas and suggestions. Don’t leave me alone out here in cyberspace, the silence is scary.

My name is Davie, I am the one responsible for making GSN into something. The website around us is the product of my efforts, with the help of some others I will introduce to you. As you can see, GSN is a project that is very much under development, and as it takes shape over the next few weeks and months, I will tell the inside story behind GSN here, in this blog. I hope to give you an idea of the thinking behind this site, and some of the dramas that surround it day to day, as they do everything, and I also invite you to take part in the process by sending in your comments. This can be a lonely process at times, sitting in front a screen for much of the day, so your company will be welcome, as will your suggestions. I hope you enjoy my blog, its here mostly for my sanity, and for a bit of fun. So here goes.
